Tip of the Week

Have you cut back or eliminated meat from your eating plan?

Enjoying meat is does not have to be a thing of the past. If you choose the right cut and portion size it can fit into a healthful eating plan. A healthful eating plan calls for five to seven ounces of meat, fish or poultry every day. To make that plan work, choose lean cuts of meat. Cuts with most of the fat on the exterior, which can be trimmed, make the best choices. Trimming visible fat can reduce fat intake by as much as 50 percent.

Keep your portion sizes in line, one is about equal to a deck of cards, this provides adequate protein while controlling fat. Choose cuts from the loin, flank, or round. And donīt make meat the focus of your meal. Plan meals to include a side dish, vegetables, salad, whole grain bread and even dessert. Enjoying a wide variety of foods is easy when you plan lean.
